Psalm 125

A song of ascents.

1 Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be shaken but endures forever.
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds his people
both now and forevermore.

3 The scepter of the wicked will not remain
over the land allotted to the righteous,
for then the righteous might use
their hands to do evil.

4 LORD, do good to those who are good,
to those who are upright in heart.
5 But those who turn to crooked ways
the LORD will banish with the evildoers.

Peace be on Israel.

Questions to consider:

  • To what are the people who trust in the Lord compared?
  • What is special about this comparison?
  • Who does the Lord surround?
  • What will happen to those are "evildoers"?

Possibilities for prayer:

This psalm ends with a declaration of God's justice. This strikes me as kind of interesting, since we've likely all experienced or seen situations that seemed to be lacking any kind of justice. David does not doubt God's ultimate justice, and my hunch is that we shouldn't either. God will ultimately allow his justice to reign, so even though it sometimes seems to be missing in the world we currently inhabit, we can have hope this world is not all there is.

Today, let's pray for more of God's justice to inhabit our world, as we live in the tension of the "now" and the "not yet" of God's kingdom. Ask that God would make you an instrument of bringing kingdom justice to the places in which you spend your time, and give you vision for how you might act that out.
